Countryside Home Refurbishment and Extension

Kingsdown | Kent

Near the picturesque village of Kingsdown, not far from the Cliffs of Dover, we were asked to design an extension to an existing house on a secluded, well-situated property with substantial views into the surrounding valley.

Our brief was to provide a new extension and renovation of a rather unremarkable, yet potentially charming, mid-century cottage. On the ground floor, we provided a generous, open plan living-dining-kitchen area with double-sided fireplace.

This main room of the extension provides our client couple generous spaces for their frequent weekend gatherings of friends. On the first floor is a substantial office-sitting room commanding views to the surrounding landscape.

Important to the design was to establish a strong connection between inside and outside on both floors, both physically - to the garden, pool and terrace - and visually - to the fantastic views. We were asked to ensure that the house would feel comfortable for the couple on their own, while also accommodating overnight guests and larger parties.

We were able to achieve this by linking the numerous rooms through visual connectivity – looking through and across spaces – and spatial flow across the new and existing. Externally our challenge was to devise a way of blending and improving the look of the cottage with the extension.
