MONMOUTH ROAD STUDIO
Notting Hill, London | W2
We brought to life what was once a Victorian artist studio. Transforming this outbuilding at the back of a Georgian Grade 2 Listed property in Notting Hill into a multi-use space for work and play as well as guest accommodation in a newly excavated basement.
We took the original shape of this Victorian outbuilding and brought it back to life. The building needed an entirely new ceiling and windows, as well as interior fit out. We followed some of the structure’s original lines and arrangements through some investigative work, finding, for example, the original angle of the clerestorey windows.
Our approach was deliberately responsive and adaptive to the existing structure, not only because it’s in a conservation area but because we were interested in maintaining and celebrating the aura of the past while finding design solutions for today. The red-brown timber panelling to the back was carefully removed and re-purposed, giving the room a dramatic and expressive full-height wall in which we integrated shallow shelving for artwork, photographs and objects.
The mezzanine, with small office, is located to the front, overlooking the internal space below and view back to the main house and garden.
